Position Overview:
We are currently seeking a Registered Nurse (Pre-Op) to fill an opening at a hospital located in Marrero, LA. This role focuses on preparing surgical patients for safe anesthesia and operative procedures, conducting thorough pre-operative assessments, and providing patient and family education to optimize surgical outcomes.

Qualifications:
- Education: Completion of an accredited Registered Nurse (RN) program (Associate's or Bachelor's degree).
- Licensure: Active Louisiana state RN license and current BLS Certification.
- Experience: At least one year of relevant experience is required.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in pre-operative assessment (physical, medication, and history review), IV insertion, phlebotomy, EKG administration, and use of electronic medical records (EMR).
- Soft Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; compassionate and calming bedside manner; strong organizational abilities to manage patient flow; critical thinking for identifying surgical risks; ability to work collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and OR staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform comprehensive pre-operative nursing assessments, including medical history, surgical history, medication reconciliation (including anticoagulants and herbals), allergies, and vital signs.
- Identify and communicate potential surgical or anesthesia risks (e.g., difficult airway, latex allergy, bleeding risk, malignant hyperthermia history) to the surgical and anesthesia teams.
- Initiate IV access, collect lab specimens (CBC, BMP, PT/INR, type and screen, pregnancy tests, etc.), and administer pre-operative medications as ordered (e.g., antibiotics, anti-emetics, anxiolytics).
- Review and verify informed consent, NPO status, advance directives, and any required preoperative testing results (EKG, chest X-ray, lab work).
- Educate patients and families on the surgical procedure, what to expect before, during, and after surgery, pain management options, and post-operative discharge instructions (including activity restrictions, medication changes, and follow-up appointments).
- Maintain patient safety by using surgical site marking protocols, completing the pre-operative safety checklist (time-out preparation), and ensuring all required documentation is complete in the EMR.
- Coordinate patient flow between the pre-op area, OR, and PACU, communicating with multiple team members to ensure timely surgical starts.
- Provide emotional support and anxiety reduction for patients and families prior to surgery.
